Special Education - Moderate and Severe Disabilities Certification Preparation

EKU’s online Moderate and Severe Disabilities certification is a graduate, non-degree granting program that focuses on best practices and promotes the knowledge and skill sets needed to advance the quality of services and educational programs for students. The program meets Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board requirements and prepares educators to meet school-wide challenges and help students to reach their full potential.

Students pursuing this option must hold an undergraduate degree and Kentucky Provisional Teaching Certificate in IECE, Elementary, Middle Grades, Special Education (LBD, D/HH) or High School content areas. Program graduates certified in Kentucky will be eligible to apply for openings that serve students with moderate to severe disabilities (P-12). 

NOTE: If you do not hold teacher certification in Kentucky, please consult with your state’s licensing agency to determine whether our program will meet your state’s licensure requirements.

Program requirements

  • Prospective graduate students must meet the admissions requirements of the Graduate School.
  • Candidates without prior graduate coursework must either have earned an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (or a GPA of 3.25 or higher in their last 60 hours) or they must submit either GRE or MAT scores.
  • Candidates must have a valid state teaching certification.
